The Department of Transportation is tightening regulations on sea travel ahead of the Holy Week rush, with the signing a joint circular to prevent overloading and mandating the implementation of an electronic ticketing system at Batangas Port.
The directive, backed by the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA), the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA), and the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), seeks to enhance passenger safety and reduce congestion as domestic travel surges during the holiday season.
Under the new rules, the PPA will oversee port operations, while the PCG will enforce vessel weight limits based on passenger and vehicle load. MARINA will penalize non-compliant shipping operators.
“The government is serious about this. We will not compromise, we will not risk the safety and security of our travelers,” Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon said during a port inspection.
The PPA’s electronic ticketing system, set for rollout this month, is expected to curb ticket overselling by enabling real-time monitoring of passenger volume. Ticket kiosks will be available inside the terminal, eliminating the need for manual lines.
Dizon also noted the ongoing infrastructure improvements at Batangas Port’s passenger terminal, including upgraded restrooms, covered walkways, prayer and nursing rooms, and mobility support for the elderly and persons with disabilities.
